Pick-up Performance 2020 - ongoing
Performance and Video installation

Definition: Pickup
An electromagnetic device which detects vibrations from a musical instrument.
An anacrusis, note or sequence of notes which precedes the first downbeat in a bar.
A musical ensemble brought together for only a few performances (pickup-band or group).

This new video installation by Evan Furness titled "Pickup Performance" explores how live musical performances translate into digital space using themes of distance, connection and artiface. In this new work, a video of the artist performing an improvised guitar set is played on a cellphone wedged between the strings of the same guitar. "Pickup Performance" explores this distanced relationship. What does it mean to collectively experience something across the world at the same time? How does the mediation of performances through distance and technology impact our experience of them collectively on an emotional level? By humorously combining the pre-recorded video performance with the live setting of the installation, this new work investigates the differences between the physical, ephemeral presence of in-person performance and its intangible, yet more permanent digital opposite. This installation was presented for FLOURISH Festival 2021 in Fredericton, NB (www.flourish-fest.com).
